S. Shankar

Shankar is currently considered one of the most talented director in the Cine Industry in India. All the films directed by him were super mega hits and each of them is breaking the records. He is the most wanted director in the industry. Shankar used to shape his talents from the days of his Assistant Director post. After learning all about directing a film, he placed his foot strongly as a director in the film "Gentleman". The film is a big hit. He continue with his hit films Prabhu Deva starred "Kadalan", Kamalhasan starred "Indian" and Prasanth starred "Jeans". His latest film released during deepavali 1999 "Muthalvan" also joined his hit list. He used to implement new techniques in his films and will bring out the talent of the artists with them.

Pagal Nilavu (1985) was his first film in Tamil, from then he went on to establish a place for himself in Tamil film Industry. Kathir entered the film industry with great style. His very first film "Idhayam" was a Silver jubilee hit. K.Bagyaraj

Bagyaraj is multi faceted film personality he is a director, actor, screenplay & dialogue writer and a producer. He started his career as an assistant to director G.Ramakrishnan and then to Barathirajaa. He wrote the dialogue for Kizhake Pogum rayil (1978). He made his directorial debut with the film Suvarillatha Chittirangal. He then started his own concern and produced a series of popular films. He created his own style in movie making, he laced humor in his stories, this way of story telling became very popular with the masses. He has directed and acted in more than twenty five films. He has also directed a Hindi film. Currently he is directing various TV Serials.

K.Balachandar

K.Balachandar graduated to movies from amateur drama.He got a break in films as a script writer for the movie Deivathai (1964), he made his directorial debut in 1965. His first movie Neerkumizhi was based on one of his successful plays. He founded his own concern Kalakendra and produced a string of successful movies. His films are set in contemporary times, his early films retained some features of the stage. He used outdoor locales effectively in his later works. He started handling political issues with his Achamillai...Achamiilai (1984). He has directed around seventy movies, though most of them in Tamil, he has directed movies in Telugu, Kannada and Hindi. He has introduced a number of artistes who later went on to make their mark in filmdom.They include RajiniKanth and Sujatha. He has won a number of awards. He was awarded the Padma Shri award by the Government of India in 1987. Four of his films Iru kodugal, Aboorva Ragangal, Thaneer...Thaneer and Achamillai...Achamillai won awards from the Government of India as best regional films. Now he is directing various TV Serials.

Balu Mahendra

Balu Mahendra is a cinematography graduate and a gold medallist from the Film and Television
Institute of India in Pune. He started his film career as a cameraman for the Malayalam film Nellu in 1974 which got him the best cinematographer award from the Government of India. He has been chosen the best cinematographer for as many as ten films. His first film as a director was
Kokila (Kannada,1976), which earned him a National Award. Azhiyatha Kolanagl (1979) was his first directorial venture in Tamil. He is one of the few film makers in Tamil who can tell a story visually. He writes the script for his films, handles the camera and edits the film himself, thus retaining a firm control over his films.

Bharathiraaja

Bharathiraja started his film career as an assistant to director P.Pullaiya and Kannada film maker
Puttanna Kanagal. His first film 16 vayathinile for which he wrote the story and the script made a big impact on the filmgoers. With authentic rural locales, outdoor sequences he revolutionised Tamil film making. His films deal in social themes in a rural back ground. His film Vedam Pudhithu
dealt with caste prejudice. His film Karuthamma which deals with female infanticide won him the
award for being the best film with the a social message. His film Mudahl Mariyadhai won the
best regional film award. He as directed movies in Malayalam, Telugu and Hindi also. Recently he introduced his son Manoj as an actor in his latest film Taj Mahal.

S.Balachandar (1927-1990)

S.Balachandar's career in films, as producer, director, music director and actor is overshadowed by his image as a Veena mastero. He made his debut in films, as a child actor. His first film was Sita Kalyanam (1933), he enacted child roles in a number of films. At 21, he played the role of twins in the film Idhu Nijama (1948) for which he also composed the music. He made his debut as a director in the film En Kanavar (1948). The influence of Western movies in his work is very evident his film Avana Ivan ? (1962), was based on George Steven's A Place In The Sun. The music he scored for films also showed heavy western influences. It was a blend of musical styles: jazz, Latin American, Western and Indian classical music. In the 1960s he began producing films under the banner S.B.Creations and specialised in thrillers and suspense stories.

A.Bhimsing (1924 - 78)

Bhimsing started his film career as an assistant editor with the film making duo Krishnan-Panju, in the late forties. Ammaiyappan (1954), was his first movie as a director. This movie was followed by other movies. Encouraged by the success their success at the box office. He started his own concern Buddha Pictures and directed Pathi Bakthi . This movie established his place as a director. In his work he never tried to say anything contrary to the prevalent beliefs and traditions of his audience. His films mainly dealt with family relationships. He made a series of films all of which started with the Tamil syllable 'pa' Pasamallar (1961), and Pavamannippu are notable among them .

Durai

Durai started his film career as an assistant to director Yoganand and later he worked as an assistant to director G.V.Aiyer in the latter's award winning film Hamsageetha (Kannada, 1975). Avalum Penthane was his first film as a director. This film with a an unsual theme and structure established him as a director. His film mainly dealt with social issues. After his film he made a serries of films in Tamil, Hindi, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada. A number of his films won awards. His best film is Pasi (1979), it dealt about the life of the people living in the slums of Chennai. It was chosen as the Best Tamil film of the year by the Government of India. Actress Shoba who played the role of a rag-picker won the Country's Best Actress award

J.Mahendran

Mahendran made an immediate impact with his first film Mullum Mallarum (1978). His next film
Udhiripookal (1979) was based on a short story written by Pudumaipithan, firmly established him as an important film maker. His work stands apart stylistically, with a penchant for realism and
sincerity of approach.

A.P.Nagarajan (1928-77)

A.P.Nagarajan started his film career as a dialogue writer for Nalvar (1953), in which he also acted. He founded a production with actor V.K.Ramasamy and made Nalla Idathu Sambandham
in 1958. When he started directing, his first few films were based on contemporary themes like the one on a boy guide working in Mahabalipuram (Vaa Raja Vaa). In the mid sixties he directed a series of films on religious subjects like Sarasvathi Sabatham (1966), there by starting a trend in Tamil film making.

P.Neelakantan

Neelakantan graduated to movies from stage play. His stage play Nam Iruvar was brought by movie
mogul A.V.Meyyappa chettiar and made into a film in 1947. Then he wrote the dialogues for films like Vedala Ulagam (1948). The first film he directed was Oru Iravu (1951), the dialogue for which was written by C.N.Annadurai. Two films that made him very famous are ALS productions Ambikapadi (1957) and Thirudathe (1961). He has directed movies in Kannada and Sinhalese.

C.V.Sridhar

Sridhar entered films as a dialogue writer when his play Ratha Pasam was adapted as a film. He made his debut as a director with Kalyanaparisu which was a mega hit. He started his own production concern Chitralaya in 1961 and made a series of commercially successful films like
Nenjil Oru Alayam (1962). In all his films he used the stars-melodrama-and -songs combination.
He has directed films in Hindi, Kannada and Telugu.
